Men's Jumpers: The Mid-Layer That Makes More Outfits Work Than Any Other

A good jumper is one of the hardest-working pieces in a men's wardrobe. If investing in cashmere, invest properly and care for it carefully — hand wash in cool water, lay flat to dry.

Cotton knits are the warm-weather alternative — breathable, lighter, and appropriate in contexts where wool would be too warm. A cotton half-zip or crewneck is a practical layer for spring and early autumn without the weight of a winter knit.

Neck Styles

The crewneck is the most versatile — works over a T-shirt alone, over a shirt with the collar showing, or under a jacket. The V-neck works particularly well over a shirt and tie in smart-casual contexts, with the V framing the collar and tie cleanly. The roll or turtleneck neck has a more distinct visual character and works best as a standalone layer without a shirt underneath — it tends to look better in finer knits where the neck does not add excessive bulk.

Weight and Occasion

Lightweight knits (fine gauge merino or cotton) sit at the refined end and work in almost any smart-casual context; mid-weight knits are the everyday workhorse; heavyweight chunky knits (cable knit, fisherman's knit) are casual and cold-weather focused.
