Facial Skincare: The Foundation Underneath Everything Else

Every dermatologist, every makeup artist, every person with genuinely great skin will tell you the same thing: skincare is the base. No amount of foundation, concealer, or filter can replicate what healthy, well-maintained skin looks like in person. The glow, the texture, the way makeup sits — all of it starts with what you're doing before any colour touches your face. Facial skincare isn't vanity; it's maintenance. Your skin is the largest organ you have, and it's the one everyone sees.

The skincare industry can be overwhelming. Hundreds of products, dozens of active ingredients, ten-step routines that look more like chemistry experiments than self-care. But the truth is that effective skincare doesn't need to be complicated. Three to four well-chosen products used consistently will outperform a twelve-product routine used sporadically every single time.

The Core Routine — What You Actually Need

Cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen. That's the non-negotiable foundation. Everything else — serums, toners, exfoliants, masks — is supplementary. Optional. Nice to have, but not essential. If you're doing nothing else, these three steps protect your skin, keep it hydrated, and prevent the vast majority of premature ageing. It takes under two minutes, morning and night.

Cleanser removes dirt, oil, pollution, sunscreen, and makeup. A gentle, pH-balanced cleanser that doesn't leave your skin feeling tight or stripped is the goal. Foaming cleansers suit oily skin; cream or oil cleansers suit dry or sensitive skin; gel cleansers work for most skin types. Double cleansing (oil cleanser first to dissolve makeup and sunscreen, then a water-based cleanser) is worth the extra sixty seconds if you wear makeup or SPF daily.

Moisturiser hydrates and strengthens the skin barrier — that microscopic layer of lipids and proteins that keeps moisture in and irritants out. A compromised barrier leads to dryness, sensitivity, redness, and breakouts. Even oily skin needs moisturiser; stripping oil without replacing moisture just signals your skin to produce more oil. Lightweight gel moisturisers for oily skin, richer creams for dry skin, and something in between for everyone else.

Sunscreen is the single most effective anti-ageing product that exists. UV radiation causes the overwhelming majority of visible skin ageing — wrinkles, dark spots, loss of elasticity, uneven texture. SPF 30 minimum, applied every morning, reapplied every two hours if you're outdoors. This one habit does more for your skin long-term than every serum and treatment combined. Non-negotiable. Full stop.

Active Ingredients — The Targeted Additions

Retinoids (retinol, retinal, tretinoin) accelerate cell turnover, stimulate collagen, and improve everything from acne to fine lines. They're the single most evidence-backed active ingredient in skincare. Start low, go slow, use at night, and always wear sunscreen the next morning. The initial adjustment period (purging, dryness, peeling) passes within four to six weeks for most people.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that brightens, evens skin tone, and protects against environmental damage. Best used in the morning, under sunscreen, where it boosts SPF effectiveness. L-ascorbic acid is the most potent form but also the most unstable — look for products in opaque, airless packaging and store away from light and heat.

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) reduces redness, minimises pores, regulates oil production, and strengthens the skin barrier. It's one of the most versatile and well-tolerated actives, suitable for virtually every skin type and combinable with most other ingredients. If you're adding one serum to your core routine, niacinamide is often the smartest first choice.

Exfoliants — AHAs (glycolic, lactic acid) and BHAs (salicylic acid) — remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and improve texture and brightness. AHAs work on the skin's surface (good for dullness and fine lines). BHAs penetrate into pores (good for blackheads and acne). Use two to three times a week, not daily, and not alongside retinol on the same night unless your skin is well-accustomed to both. Over-exfoliating is one of the most common skincare mistakes — it strips the barrier, causes redness and sensitivity, and makes every other product in your routine sting. If your skin is feeling raw or looks shiny-tight rather than healthy-glowy, you're exfoliating too often or too aggressively. Scale back and let your barrier recover.

Consistency Beats Complexity

The best routine is the one you'll actually do. A three-product routine used every morning and night beats a ten-product routine you abandon after a week. Results take time — four to twelve weeks for most active ingredients to show visible improvement. Switching products every few days because you're not seeing instant results is the fastest way to irritate your skin and see no progress at all. Patience and consistency are the two things the skincare industry rarely markets, but they're the two things that actually determine whether your routine works or not.
